How to Clean Out and Repurpose Your Candle Jars

Repurposed candle jar being used as a flower vase filled with pink flowers

Have a few old candle jars lying around?

When you go to burn your favorite candle and realize it's running low, don't fret! Your candle jar doesn't have to become waste, it can be cleaned and repurposed so it gains a new life away from the landfill. Follow the steps below to learn how!

1. Scrape off as much wax as you can

Candle jars with a bit of wax left in them

Use a strong spoon to scrape out as much wax as you can. The more you can get out during this step, the less time it'll take to fully clean out the jar.

2. Prepare a water bath

Choose a pot large enough to fit your candle jar, and start a water bath with about 4 inches of water.

3. Melt and remove wax

Place your jar in the water bath and leave it in until all the wax has melted. Once it has melted, carefully discard the wax in a heat safe container.

4. Use paper towel to remove any remaining wax

Use a paper towel to remove any melted wax that is still clinging to the jar. If there is still a lot of wax, repeat the water bath and use a new paper towel if needed.

5. Wash the jar

Using plenty of hot water and a soapy sponge, wash the jar by hand to clean out any stubborn wax.

6. Optional: Use the dishwasher

Pop your jar in the dishwasher for an extra cleaning, making sure there is no leftover wax that may clog your machine.
