Check out these easy plants for beginners: they tolerate low light levels and infrequent watering, making them perfect for those who are starting out with indoor gardening!

1. Pothos (Epipremnum aureum)

Pothos are also known as devil’s ivy, golden pothos, and devil's vine. They are a type of trailing vine, and can be easily propagated (made into more plants) using stem cuttings.

They can thrive under low light and even fluorescent lighting, so they’re a good pick for offices and other enclosed spaces.

They will droop when they need water, so they’re good for people that may forget to water their plants and need a visual indicator.

2. Snake Plant (Dracaena trifasciata)

The snake plant is also known as mother-in-law’s tongue, and will survive for weeks without being watered. In fact, it thrives in dry soil and needs to be watered sparingly, once about every 2-3 weeks should be enough in the summer.

These also thrive in low light, and can grow perfectly well in dim rooms or corners that receive little light.

They are known for their ability to remove harmful gases such as formaldehyde from the air.

3. Jade Plant (Crassula ovata)

The Jade Plant is also known as rattlesnake plant, living coral, or string of buttons, and is a type of succulent.

Like most succulents, they have low water needs, so are ideal for those who forget to water their plants. They’re also easy to propagate, as any leaf that falls off will become a full plant.

They do need a bit of sun to maintain their deep green colour, so placing them near a window that receives indirect light for most of the day is ideal.

4. Peace Lily (Spathiphyllum sp.)

Peace lilies are native to the tropics, but they can thrive in your home too! They like to be spritzed with water to simulate humid tropical conditions. Because of their tropical origin, they are susceptible to cold weather, so make sure to maintain them in an area that is above 12°C.

They prefer the shade, so they are great for those rooms that only get a bit of sunlight. It’s best to underwater peace lilies instead of overwatering, since you risk causing root rot. They will droop when they are in need of water, which is great for those who forget to water their plants and need a reminder.

5. Chinese Evergreen (Aglaonema commutatum.)

Chinese evergreens are both beautiful and hard to kill. They have colour variations of green, silver, red, and pink, so they can be great additions to match home decor.

They are slow growing, which means you won’t need to worry about repotting them anytime soon. Thriving in shady conditions, they are also great for rooms that don’t get much sunlight. The lighter the colour of the leaves on your Chinese Evergreen, the more sunlight it will need, so plant needs will vary.

To water your Chinese Evergreen, thoroughly soak the pot and then let it dry between waterings, making sure that it doesn’t dry out completely.

6. ZZ Plant (Zamioculcas zamiifolia)

The ZZ Plant is drought-tolerant, which makes it easy to grow for those who tend to forget to water their plants.

They should be watered about every 2 weeks. Let their soil dry completely between waterings, check the top two inches of soil to see if it’s dry. ZZ Plants can grow well in low-light conditions, but do prefer some indirect sunlight.

If placing your ZZ Plant near a window, make sure that the temperature doesn’t fall below 7°C, as they are not fond of cold temperatures.
